Gardens of the Moon
By Steven Erikson
This is the first book in the “Malazan Book of the Fallen,” an epic fantasy series massive both in scope and number of pages. Fans of Robert Jordan's “The Wheel of Time” and George R.R. Martin's “Song of Ice and Fire” may appreciate this series, although taken as a whole, Erikson's work may be broader in both scope and style. “Gardens of the Moon” is a relatively gentle introduction; the series soon veers in unexpected directions, with numerous characters of absurd power (for all the good it does them). Tragedy has its day, as does farce, and the latter may prove equally or more powerful.
