About Kat

Kat Johnson is an artist and arts educator living and working in Bangor, Maine. Her work is largely inspired by the natural world and phenomenological considerations. Personal narrative and popular culture shape the aesthetic of her work, and her aim is to connect with the viewer through shared universal human experiences.

Naturea Poetica is a series of prints conceived and executed in the spring of 2020. These seven hand painted prints represent the technicolor versions of the original linocut works. The limited color palette references the acidic, candy colored images seen in contemporary media and advertising. These subjects from the natural world, when discovered and documented by naturalists, were given either a poetic or romantic common name, hence the title Naturea Poetica. By utilizing the vibrant, saturated hues of modern day’s cacophonous visual culture, the artist hopes to grab the attention of the viewer, even for a moment of pause, to look closer at the beautiful natural world around us.
